The shootings that happened last weekend hit home with our TYFC City Life staff as one of the young men killed, Philip Johnson, was a participant at SOZO, our Tuesday night drop in at the People’s Community Center. I remember getting the call Sunday night from Jeff Clare alerting me that Darrin Miller and his team were mobilizing to help meet the needs that come from such a tragedy. Little did I know all that the City Life team was coordinating. Monday afternoon Darrin convened a meeting of youth pastors and other community leaders to discuss what we could do together to stop a looming gang war. Tuesday night there were over 150 kids and families members at SOZO for a meal and opportunities to share about Philip. Several of our staff, especially Dwayne Parker, a former gang leader, shared from their hearts with these kids about the need for Jesus to transform them. Many kids were prayed for and 2 gave their lives to Christ! There is a prayer vigil tonight and more gatherings to come… I’m really proud of Darrin, Chrisy, Doug and many others who are doing every thing they can to bring some stability and hope to a dark situation. I’m also grateful for the YFC ministry partners who stepped forward to donate the funds to provide the meal last night and for upcoming gatherings. Amazing how this community comes together…especially the body of Christ!
